Wir sprachen über das Konzept der "Urban Diplomacy", dessen Bedeutung für Europa und International und wie man in Deutschland die kommunalen Außenbeziehungen auch von Seiten der Bundesregierung noch nachhaltiger als Element der Außenpolitik verankern könnte.

In der Reihe "Talks on Urban Diplomacy" sprachen wir mit Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, Präsidentin des Deutschen Volkshochschulverbandes. Der DVV International hat mit dem Projekt Urban X-Change Network - gefördert durch das Auswärtige Amt und in Kooperation mit dem Deutschen Städtetag - einen Beitrag zur Entwicklung kommunaler Aussenbeziehungen geleistet. Bei dem Projekt standen die Themen Dialog der städtischen Zivilgesellschaft und Erwachsenenbildung im Vordergrund.

In the latest "Talk on Urban Diplomacy" at Kosmopolis.org, Martin van der Pütten, Head of International Relations Office at the City of Dortmund, gives us an insight into his work. Martin is one of the main voices of German cities on Urban Diplomacy. Within his office, the first Coordinator for Urban Diplomacy was appointed. The city is a driving force for the policy concept.

In der Reihe Gespräche zu kommunaler Außenpolitik / Talks on Urban Diplomacy konnte ich nach gleichnamigen Panel an der Hauptversammlung des Deutschen Städtetages 2023 mit dem Oberbürgermeister der Stadt Mannheim, Dr. Peter Kurz sprechen.
Die Stadt Mannheim und er persönlich haben die Debatte und vor allem das Handeln deutscher Kommunen in internationalen Beziehungen nachhaltig geprägt. Im Talk Urban spricht er zu seiner Motivation und gibt einen Blick in die Zukunft und Stärkung von Kommunen.

In der Reihe Gespräche Urban Diplomacy konnte Alex Thamm mit Cathryn Clüver Ashbrook sprechen, die das Thema bei der Bertelsmann-Stiftung verantwortet. Nicht erst seit sie in Berlin ist, hat sie das Thema auf das internationale Paket gebracht. Bei der Harvard School hat sie von Anfang an Modelle und Ideen entwickelt, wie Kommunen noch stärker auf der internationalen Bühne ihren Platz finden. Was sie sich von der weiteren Entwicklung erwartet, konnten wir sie beim Deutschen Städtetag fragen.

As part of the AICGS Programm "Social divisions and questions of identity" https://www.aicgs.org a group of 16 Americans and Germans visited Memmingen.
We could meet with the newly elected and just inaugurated Mayor Jan Rothenbacher (SPD) on May 23rd, 2023. After our discussion, I could ask him on the goals he wants to achieve, the importance of administration in creating social cohesion and what he thinks of the international role of cities through policy concepts like Urban Diplomacy.

Am 2. Februar 2023 hatte der Interreligiöse Tisch Duisburg Burak Yilmaz in das jüdische Gemeindezentrum Duisburg - Oberhausen eingeladen, um gemeinsam mit fast 150 Menschen über das Thema interkulturelle Arbeit mit jungen Menschen in Duisburg zu sprechen.
Nach der Veranstaltung konnte ich Burak Yilmaz fragen, was ihn zum Buch motiviert hat und welche Themen ihm weiter wichtig sind. www.Burak-Yilmaz.de

Alex in the US: My scholarship of the AICGS also allowed me to meet colleagues in Washington DC and around. At the GMF Cities program of German Marshall Fund of the United States I could take my colleagues Cynthia and Murat along. Cynthia is heading our Community Organizing work in Maryland and is the organizer of Action in Montgomery, Murat is from Berlin, but working at the moment for ACT in Annapolis.
